one (wo)man’s fugly…
is another’s omg!!! drop everything!!! i’ve GOT to knit that NOW!!!
i think thought LOL! this sweater looks cute (especially as portrayed in the first shot, on the cover of the magazine - the very same Simply Knitting mentioned in my previous post)
bringing up the rear - which is where it gets downright scary in my OPINION (page 18)
so what am I getting at? well, in an attempt to explore what *I* consider fugage/fuggage (do you prefer one or two g’s - anyone?) and moreover why, I present this sweater for your consideration.
at first glance I liked the color and could even embrace the dingleberries (disclosure: I own, have worn, and will wear again - fate permitting - an anthropologie sweater vest in mustard replete with said dingleberries).
but (or butt), my ‘tocks don’t need additional padding, so, the combination of dingleberries AND flaring ruffles is deadly. however, I know some ladies could make good use of the visual illusion (soooo jealous-<teeth grinding>).
i also know that the sweater can be modified, etc. etc. etc.
why THIS sweater (wtf?): well, when whatnottoknit gave me the greenlight as a contributor, I began looking for fuggage (I think two g’s look better) in my stash while standing next to my DH, who without hesitation, nominated said sweater.
his reasoning:
- brown/blue color scheme (I countered that this is *in* and besides, the tank top/shirt doesn’t count when determining fugliness)
- the bell sleeves which “date to the American revolution”
- the ribbon tie - “looks infantile, too precious”
- the dingleberries (he’s forgotting that I wear dingleberries); and last, but not least…
- the flaring ruffles covering the model’s backside (here we had reached a consensus)
will I ever knit this sweater? your guess is as good as mine!
pass the Corona - cheers! =

This looks like a costume for the old Dark Shadows TV series to me — kind of a 1960/1970s version of something from the turn of the previous century. Just replace the current model with Lara Parker and we’d be all set!
Not sure if that means I like it or not, though . . .

I’d probably knit it, swapping out the bobbles for a lace motif or something, and ditching the ribbon (which looks out of scale and far too precious).

I don’t know… I don’t know… Each thing separate is okay, but put together, like my son would say, “It’s just wrong, Mom, it’s just wrong!”

Dingleberries are fine for kleenex covers, but should never be worn on one’s person. Except for you, firesheep. They look great on you.

the ruffled cuffs would be okay on an otherwise plain cardi but with the addition of the dingleberries SO NOT.
The ribbon - I always think it looks like the designer copped out on coming up with a proper closure plus, yeah, too precious
The bum rufflage ? well unless one is built like Kate Moss or Mrs Beckham, again so NOT the way I want to see anyone.
Nice colour but a prime example of trying to put too many ideas into one garment. Whatever happened to the KISS principle?

Even the front is a little suspect with those boil bobbles sticking out of her sleeves.

I disagree with you regarding what makes this a fug. It’s just one word: bobbles. You thought they were cute. I think they look cancerous.

I hate the color and this thing would make my butt look big. Maybe in cream or pink, but other than that I like it.

ROTFLMAO!!! I was peacefully scrolling down, saw her face, shoulders, armbows, and thought it doesn’t look bad at all… and then I saw the thing below the breastline… Oh, yes, it DOES look bad. LOL

It’s just ugly. I hate those froofy sweaters I’m always finding patterns for at the yarn store. What puts it over the edge is the ribbon, I think.
