I’m having a hard time deciding if the sweater part fell off or if this is REALLY a knitted hood.

And how would you wear it? And when? When would it be appropriate to wear a knitted hood? It doesnt even look good with the outfit modeled, and I just dont know what you could possibly wear this with.
And that, my friends, should be the first thing you think when you’re about to knit something like this. The five W’s people, who would wear it, what would you wear it with, when would you wear it, where would you wear it, and WHY in god’s name would you knit it?

Actually, if you wear it under a heavy coat, it’s not completely bad. It can be like a wraparound scarf of sorts.
But on it’s own like in the picture above. Utterly ridiculous.

I own some garments along these lines to wear when I have to work outside in the very, very cold – it’s a functional part of an outfit that involves multiple layers of coat, hat and scarf. But I stitch mine together out of fleece remnants at the fabric store, so they cost a buck and five minutes. Not about to hand-knit purely utilitarian garments. And not about to wear a hood over a cute blouse and cardigan with nothing else.

It look skinda medieval to me.

my mom wears something like this when she has to be out in the intense cold. she prefers not to get “hat hair” when it is -16.
regardless f the correct function… the art director for this photo shoot needs a stern talking to about reality.

I would wear it in the bleak midwinter when you NEED hats, but don’t want the totally flat hat-hair look you get from the watch caps that keep your ears warm…
I’d wear it with my COAT… cause I’d make it out of wool, or wool and alpaca.
I’d wear it b/c for some reason, I just don’t do scarves, but would like my neck to stay warm.
Once the midwinter winds have died down, and it’s safe to go out without the whole hat/scarf/dickey combo you’d need sans this garment, I’d clean it, and put it away til next year.
Under no circumstances would you see me with it and NOT the coat, unless I was about to put the coat on, or had just taken it off, and you caught me in the middle of gearing up or de-nanooking myself.

I vote you could wear it to a star wars convention. It would go great with the jedi robe.

I can imagine a pretty knitted hood that would be warm, attractive (worn with your COAT of course), and really effective for its purpose.
That thing is not it.
I have no problem with it being a knitted hood. I have EVERY problem with it being…. that color, that style, that unattractive bulky yarn, that pattern, and again, the art director needs to find a new career.
Sometimes I think Lion Brand should just give up.

You could wear it with your little red ridding hood dress and basket!

I assume it’s cold weather wear. You put it on, put your coat on, gloves, off you go into the wintry world. I like that better than having to wear a hat and scarf, actually.

I completely agree with Penny… I would knit this for a Sci Fi convention in a heartbeat!
As a real accessory? Hell no.

I actually thought (for a split second) that I might knit this to compliment an 11th century outfit I have for Renaissance Festival.
It begs for the caption:”Help, help, I’m being repressed!”

it looks like a knitted knight’s helmet. what?!
March 23, 2008 at 8:08 pm
i can see wearing this if it was really really cold, maybe out of a different yarn though and a different color.
March 23, 2008 at 9:26 pm
I would nver wear that.

I would love to wear this hat. When I take my dogs out to the spit with wind howling from the Pacific Ocean and often rain wity it, a hat is not enough, nor is a scarf with a hat enough. This would be perfect–I could wear it under my waterproof slicker hood and my head, neck and shoulders would remain warm and the dogs would get a longer walk and I would be much happier. In fact, I hope to make this pattern up before next winter!

I would love having this one! I live in Norway, it would be great in the winter.
April 9, 2008 at 1:14 pm
Why, you’d wear it to Ye Olde Medieval fairs of course! Pair it with a loot and you’re bangin’ XD
April 9, 2008 at 3:45 pm
If it was worn properly it would look better.

I saw a pair of slipper boot things knitted in a similar style and color to this, they were worse than this.

Try Buffalo NY in March

It looks like an interesting project to knit for the increases and decreases. And I’ll knit most anything if it seems interesting and unusual.
I think it would be more practical and warmer than a cowl (which I prefer to scarves as they slip) in very cold whether.
I’d chose a different color and yarn, but that’s just my taste.

Interesting garment. I could see doing something similar, but with a different yarn, different gauge, different color, more finished edges, etc.
September 14, 2008 at 1:22 pm
I’m sure I saw this being worn in Star Wars…
November 5, 2008 at 4:54 am
This thing is…I dunno, post-apocalyptic to me. I can picture a character in a Margaret Atwood novel sportin’ this for some reason.

We ride motorcycles and sometimes, I don’t care what you wear, you can never get enough coverage. This would be great under my helmet and tucked into the top of my leather jacket. My neck would be covered and so would my ears.

I would like a FREE copy of this pattern. LBY thinks you should pay for it .
November 30, 2008 at 6:14 pm
I live in Wisconsin, and I’d make it so that the front buttoned up to keep me warm, and that the hood didn’t do that useless fallback thing, then wear it under my pea coat for when I took walks, shoveled the sidewalk, went sledding with the kids etcetc. I HATE the flat hair look a beanie cap gives me. imo that’s a very useful idea, terribly executed and worn.
December 10, 2008 at 6:04 am
the model looks like she’s slipping into an embarrassment induced coma.. the only way she could make it any worse would be to make it out of the same colored fun fur… it could be decent if under something else.. but it would have to be completely for warmth and covered completely by other stuff…

Isn’t it for those of us who haven’t got ehough of our own hair to have dreadlocks??
